Founded in 1546 as a mining town, Potosi in Bolivia soon produced fabulous wealth, becoming one of the largest cities in the Americas and the world with a population exceeding 200,000 people.

In Spanish there is still a saying, valer un potosi, "to be worth a potosi" (that is, "a fortune"). For Europeans, Peru (Bolivia was part of the Viceroyalty of Peru and was known as Alto Peru before becoming independent) was a mythical land of riches. Potosi appears as an idiom for "extraordinary richness" in Miguel de Cervantes' famous novel satirizing chivalry, Don Quixote (second part, cap. LXXI). One theory holds that the mint mark of Potosi (the letters "PTSI" superimposed on one another) is the origin of the dollar sign.

The tale of Potosi's origins begins in 1544 when a local Inca, Diego Huallpa, searching for an escaped llama, stopped to build a fire at the foot of the mountain known in Quechua as 'Potojsi' (meaning 'thunder' or 'explosion', although it might also have stemmed from potoj , 'the springs'). The fire grew so hot that the earth beneath it started to melt, and shiny liquid oozed from the ground.

Uyuni Salt Flats - A natural wonder

The Salar de Uyuni or Uyuni Salt Flats was formed by the disappearance of an inland ocean that covered most of the Altiplano and extended all the way to the Titicaca Lake. This body of water disappeared about 13,000 years ago.It is an extraordinary experience to cross this lake of salt by car, especially during the winter, because at that time the sky is completely clear and the bright blue color of the sky contrasts brilliantly with the salt. On a cloudy day there is a "white-out" effect: the horizon seems to blend in with the sky and you can hardly tell where the salt lake actually ends.Amid this shiny white desert there are idle polyhedral figures that seem to emerge from the ground; these forms have been formed by nature, mostly by the movement of the air.The islands that are in the center are attractions that marvel all visitors.

Isla Pescado (Fish Island)

The Cujiri Island, better known as Fish Island, is located at 74 kilometers from Colchani, right in the middle of the salt mines. It has a total extension of 100 hectares and a very picturesque scenery.The layer of granite and organic materials have yielded a strange breed of giant cactus (6 meters in height) which has developed an interesting ecological system.
On the island's summit there is a cave. The internal walls of the cave present a geological cut that provides information of the various layers of the ground. This is perhaps one of the best places to take wonderful pictures of the island and the salt mines as well.

Isla Incahuasi (Fishermen's Island)

The Incahuasi Island, known as the Fishermen's Island, is formed on top of the remains of a volcano at 120 meters above the surface of the salt mines.On this island there are 7 archaeological sites that belonging to the Tiwanaku culture. There are two Inca ruins, 30 caverns, 12 natural tunnels and 1 forest of cactuses (quirucolumbar, pillaya, piscallu, thulo, huajraguaya, anaguaya, etc.).
Alfredo Lazaro (a resident from Llica) has been living on the island since 1987 as a protector of this natural wonder. He has personally counted 4,030 adult cactuses, 5,000 cactuses that are still developing and 16 which are either burnt or dry. The island is also a nest to several species of birds and vizcachas (American species of rodent, similar in size and form to gophers).
This is a perfect place to contemplate an amazing landscape and to take very unique pictures.

The Tarija department is located in south eastern Bolivia bordering Argentina to the south and Paraguay to the east. The city of Tarija or San Bernardo de Tarija is the capital of the department.

Tarija, at an altitude of 6,398 feet or approx. 1,850 meters, is located in a fertile Andean valley about 160 miles southeast of Potosi. The area has rich soil and a moderate climate, making the region famous for its vineyards and orchards.

Vegetables, wheat, potatoes, corn, and other crops are grown near Tarija. However, due to the city's remote location, they are consumed by the local population. Founded in 1574, the city's commercial growth lagged due to a lack of communications.

Tarija is known for its Vendimia, or grape harvest festival, held each February. Residents of the city are noted for their outdoor religious processions. A university, founded in 1966, is also located in Tarija.

The Main Square is Luis de Fuentes. There is a statue of Luis de Fuentes, the founder of Tarija. There is also one of the leaders of the Independence struggle, Eustaquio Mendez, better known as "Moto Mendez" a legendary character of Tarija.

The Department of Tarija boasts South America's second largest natural gas reserves. Increased gas revenues and foreign direct investment in gas exploration and distribution are fueling growth and legitimizing Tarija as the next Bolivian industrial hub. The development of Tarija's gas reserves have been hindered by political instability at the national level.

Tarija is also the home of over 20 different Indigenous tribes (the Guarani tribe being the largest) ranging from 20 persons up to 1500.

Tarija is well-known for its Mediterranean-like climate and vineyards. Tarija is known as the city of the "copleros" (ballads), wine and beautiful valleys and has preserved its colonial heritage. It is a warm and pleasant place, ideal to rest and to enjoy nature.

Upon arrival to the city from its Oriel Lea Plaza airport, one will be greeted by a sign that reads, "Tarija, La Capital de la Sonrisa" ("Tarija, The Capital of Smiles") referring to the city's purported, warm hospitality and friendly inhabitants.
