Titicaca lake is located three hours by bus from La Paz. It is 283 meters deep and has a total extension of 176 kilometers by 70 kilometers.
It is the highest navigable lake in the world. At a height of 3810 meters above the sea level. A portion of the lake belongs to Bolivia and the other one to Peru. The lake is divided into two major basins, named "Lago Mayor del Titicaca" (Major Lake of the Titicaca) and "Lago Menor del Titicaca" (Minor Lake of the Titicaca).
The Major Lake or Chuchito Lake, has blueish-sweet waters and is surrounded by beautiful scenery filled with mountains and snowy peaks, which remain covered with snow because of the intense cold in the mountain range region. The islands, which are splattered with archaeological remains, provide tangible proof of the domain that Aymara civilizations have had over this area.
The Minor Lake or Winay Marka Lake, has an incredible and panoramic view of the Cordillera Real (Royal Mountain Range). This part of the lake gives travelers a chance to visit some tiny islands. These are still populated by the Aymara, most of whom live from fishing. The entire coast of the lake is connected to several natural areas that have "totorales" (patches of bulrush), which are also home to different species of birds such as ducks.
In the area that surround the Minor Lake, the Tiwanaku culture reached a great deal of development. Throughout the region there is a predominant presence of the Aymara people, who have kept their own traditional forms of life and cultural values that date back to the time of their ancestors.
The Titicaca Lake, also known as "The Sacred Lake of the Incas", is a great tourist attraction for nature lovers. It is a perfect place to enjoy a spectacular view of the snowy hills of the mountain range that contrast with the blue waters.
The most typical species of fish include the following: suches (Suchy - Quechua Word, given to a species of fish native of the Titicaca Lake) carachis, bogas (Boga - Scientific Name: Sparus box, a small type of blue fish with golden stripes and very thin teeth), umantos, and ispis (Small type of fish with very thin body) and certain species of birds, such as: wallatas or wild geese.

Madidi National Park is the world's most biodiverse nature reserve. Spanning an impressive 19000 square kilometers (about 7336 square miles), it has cloud forests, lowland jungle, rivers, streams, swamps. It even has glaciers.
More than 8000 species currently inhabit this Bolivian national reserve. The Madidi has an area of 1.8 million hectares, less than 0.0037% of the planet's surface, but it houses 3% of plants, almost 4% of vertebrates and 9% of the world's birds, according to data from the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS).
124 species and 8 subspecies species were discovered recently that are believed to be new to science, such as the spiny rat, the whip-tailed lizard and an orchid.
Besides the wildlife, about 50 indigenous communities inhabit the park, mixing their customs with modern life. Many of the locals make a living from the growing eco-tourism as well as from handicrafts, fishing, and agriculture.
The National Park Madidi is located to the Northeast of La Paz in the Franz Tamayo, Abel Iturralde and Larecaja Provinces. The park borders to the West with Peru. It has a surface of 1.895.750 hectares (18,957 km2). The climate is cold at the mountain range area, warm at the mountainous intermediate lands and hot at the north lands. The altitude varies between 6,000 and 200 meters above the sea level.
The Area has a wonderful diversity of physiographic environments, from the Apolobamba high mountain range until the Amazon area, including mountainous regions and the Sub Andinean system.
It is the protected area with the most diversity of flora: 5,000 to 6,000 species. Madidi is one of the most biologically diverse protected areas on the planet. There are species such as the quenua, huaycha, iotavio, enogal, yuraj huaycha, pinos de montecoca silvestre, aliso, chachacoma, yaruma, aliso colorado, arrayan, Limache, sauco, laurel, coloradillo del monte, quina, isigo, bilka, bibosi, guitarrero and bizcochelo. There are also numerous species of wood like mara, cedro, palo maria and ochoo. At the same time the park counts with 733 species of fauna. Among the mammals we can mention the jucumari and eyeglasses bear, Andean cat or titi, taruca or Andean deer venado de cola blanca or ciervo, puma, jaguar, tigrecillo, tropero, ciervo de los pantanos, londra, marimono, manechi and several species of the callitrichidae family. Among the birds are the crestuda eagle, tunqui, harpia, endemic colibries and various small bird species. Up to now 620 species of birds have been registered. Nevertheless a total of 1,100 species of birds are estimated to live in the Area, a number that represents 90% of the bird life in Bolivia.

How to get to Madidi Park

The way to access the Madidi National Park is from the city of Rurrenabaque. From this city you can navigate the Beni River and the Tuíchi River.
Please note: the park cannot be reached by public transport, so it is necessary to book a tour. Within the park there are some accommodations and ecolodges that provide day trips or stays of multiple days.

By Plane

From La Paz: a 40 minute flight across snow capped mountains into the green Amazon.
From Santa Cruz: a 1 hour flight leaving 4 times daily.
We do not recommend trying to reach Rurrenabaque by bus. The roads are in a bad condition and can easily be swept away by floods.

How to visit

Tours to Madidi National Park usually leave from the town of Rurrenabaque. Don't try to visit Madidi on your own, there are several short or long tours into the park, along with overnight stays at ecolodges that helps to fund their conservation efforts.
One of the best ways to experience Madidi is by cruising along the banks of the Tuichi River. The animals emerge from the jungle to drink, making it the perfect place to spot turtles, catfish, giant river otters, capybaras, macaws, and monkeys. Another great wildlife watching opportunity is a night walk through the jungle.
Madidi is also a wonderful place to learn about the vast array of medicinal plants and the traditional and sustainable uses of the natural resources of the Amazon region.

Weather

From the cold and blustery andean regions to hot and humid in the northern lowlands, the weather in Madidi varies a lot due to the park's complex topography.
There are two main seasons:
The rainy season in the summer that lasts from November to March, and the dry season or winter from April to October.
In the tropical lowlands the climate is hot and humid year round. The temperature is usually between 25ºC to 33ºC, except during June and July when the cold southern winds can (called 'surazos by the locals) can cause the temperature to drop to between 7 to 10°C. Since it is a rainforest the park receives very heavy rainfall, averaging between 800mm to 4000mm of precipitation throughout the year.

When To Go

The best time to visit is from April to October during the dry season, as this is the time of year when the animals are attracted to the water and thus more likely to be seen by visitors. There are also fewer mosquitoes as well. Keep in mind though that Madidi is a tropical rainforest, so substantial precipitation can be expected even during the dry season.

Tours in the Madidi National Park

There are several options for excursions and tours.

Full day excursion

One day tours from Rurrenabaque are ideal for those who do not have much time and include navigating on the river and entering the Madidi, lunch and a hike. The advantage is the lower price than sleeping in the park. However, much of the time for the excursion is used to arrive and return from the park.

Multi-day tours

These tours include spending one or more night in an ecolodge or accommodation within the park and meals. They give you to make more walks and reach places farther away. Night activities are also organized to observe the nocturnal animals.

Things to do:

Trek in the Amazon rainforest, learning about different plants, trees, animals and insects.

Take a sunset canoe ride to see monkeys, birds, capybaras and the perhaps a jaguar.

Swim with pink river dolphins.

Raft on the Tuichi River.

Fish for giant pacus, piranhas and catfish.

Recommendations:

The Uyuni Salt Flats, also called Salar de Uyuni in Spanish are located in southwest Bolivia. This white expanse at the feet of the Tunupa volcano is the world's largest salt desert, around 11000 square kilometers.
The Uyuni salt flat is even larger than the Lake Titicaca, a vast stretch of water shared by Bolivia and neighbouring Peru.
The salt flats themselves are at 3600 meters above sea level in the Andes - making it seem almost possible to reach up and touch the clouds from the ground.
The area has long been popular with tourists, particularly those looking for a holiday with a difference.
A few years ago interest started growing in extracting the 5.4m tons of lithium which is found just below the surface of the salt.
The salt is over 10 meters thick in the center. In the dry season, the salt plains are a completely flat expanse of dry salt, but in the wet season, the surface is covered with a thin sheet of water that reflects the sky like a giant mirror.
The Salar de Uyuni was formed by the disappearance of an inland ocean that covered most of the Altiplano and extended all the way to the Titicaca Lake. This body of water disappeared about 13000 years ago.
It is an extraordinary experience to cross this lake of salt by car, especially during the winter, because at that time the sky is completely clear and the bright blue color of the sky contrasts brilliantly with the salt. On a cloudy day there is a "white-out" effect: the horizon seems to blend in with the sky and you can hardly tell where the salt lake actually ends.
Amid this shiny white desert there are idle polyhedral figures that seem to emerge from the ground; these shapes have been formed by nature.
The islands in the middle of the salt desert are attractions that marvel all visitors.

Isla Pescado (Fish Island)

The Cujiri Island, better known as Fish Island, is located at 74 kilometers from Colchani, right in the middle of the salar. It has a total extension of 100 hectares and a very picturesque scenery.
The layer of granite and organic materials have yielded a strange breed of giant cactus (over 6 meters in height) which has developed an interesting ecological system.
On the island's summit there is a cave. The internal walls of the cave present a geological cut that provides information of the various layers of the ground. This is perhaps one of the best places to take wonderful pictures of the island and the salt mines as well.

Isla Incahuasi

The Incahuasi Island, known as the Fishermen's Island, is formed on top of the remains of a volcano at 120 meters above the surface of the salt. On this island there are 7 archaeological sites that belonged to the Tiwanaku culture. There are two Inca ruins, 30 caverns, 12 natural tunnels and 1 forest of cacti (quirucolumbar, pillaya, piscallu, thulo, huajraguaya, anaguaya).
Alfredo Lazaro (a resident from Llica) has been living on the island since 1987 as a protector of this natural wonder. He has personally counted 4030 adult cacti, 5000 cacti that are still developing and 16 which are either burnt or dry. The island is also a nest to several species of birds and home to the cute vizcachas, an American species of rodent, similar in size and form to gophers.
This is a perfect place to contemplate an amazing landscape and to take very unique pictures.
The Salar itself is virtually devoid of any wildlife or vegetation. The latter is dominated by the giant cacti (Echinopsis atacamensis pasacana and Echinopsis tarijensis). They grow at a rate of about 1 centimeter (0.39 in) per year to a height of about 12 meters (39 ft). Other shrubs include Pilaya, which is used by locals to cure catarrh, and Thola (Baccharis dracunculifolia), which is burned as a fuel. Also present are quinoa plants and quewiña bushes.
Every November the Salar de Uyuni and the region around it is the breeding ground for three species of pink South American flamingo: the Chilean, Andean and rare James's Flamingos, their color presumably originating from feeding on colourful algae. There are about 80 other bird species present, including the Horned Coot, Andean Goose and Andean Hillstar. The Andean fox (culpeo) is a representative animal, and the "islands" of Salar (in particular Incahuasi island) host colonies of rabbit-like viscachas.
The Samaipata Archaeological and Anthropological Research Centre has a collection that includes bowls, receptacles of various kinds and dishes. These have been decorated with anthropomorphic figures that date back to cultures prior to colonial times. Some of these objects are from around 200 BC. The center provides information about this Pre-Inca structure. The fortress also has a very complex drainage system, with several water channels and basins. Also, there are several sculptures made from single pieces of stone.
There is also proof that this used to be a fortress of the Kollasuyo Empire. It is recommend visiting the museum first, in order to understand better what this site and the culture are all about.
The artificial lake that it houses has become one of the favorite places for the tarijeños to go to disconnect, walk or get out of the city.

It is a medium-sized lake, ideal for a visit of a couple of hours and has panoramic views and the vegetation fits perfectly with the colors of the water.

In addition, there is the dam and although it is small it is interesting to visit, especially during the rainy season when the water passes through the overflow.

Next to the dam is a series of booths, which are one of the services that visitors can enjoy. Here you can enjoy a variety of fish from the area, along with other types of dishes such as chirriadas that are a kind of corn tortillas, humintas and crabs to calm your hunger.

The most interesting thing about is that in many of these places they still use the wood-burning stoves, and the fire provides unique aromas.

They prepare doraditos, carp, tarpon, crabs, misquinchos, pacú, peanut soup, chicken pepper, piglet on the cross.

You can rent a boat and enjoy the stillness of the water and the landscapes of beautiful mountains in the background.

If you are in Tarija and you have a few hours off (arriving at the dam only takes 15 minutes), we recommend that you make this walk, as it will be an experience you will not forget.

On an island in the middle of the lagoon there is a mural by Santa Cruz-born artist Carlo Lorgio Vaca, famous for his bas-relief murals and paintings that can be found throughout Bolivia. It shows historical moments of the city.

The park is also home to Santa Cruz's Ethnographic Museum, with artifacts from the some of the many ethnic groups that inhabited the eastern part of Bolivia.

The artificial lagoons of Potosi known as the 'lagunas de Kari Kari' are considered to be one of the main elements of the mining infrastructure. These lagoons are located in the Eastern part of the city. They were constructed in almost 50 years and with the participation of 20,000 indigenous residents. A large wall was built as well at the Northern end of the city to take advantage of the city's natural slope, to retain the water with greater ease and to use this construction as a dam. This helped to get a greater better motive power from the water kept in these construtions. The first lagoon was called "Chalviri", which was used to construct the main dam. In 1576 the digging of the "Kari Kari" Lagoon began, which has also been known as "San Idelfonso", "Chalviri" and "San Sebastian".

Puerto Suarez is the main landmark of the borderline between Brazil and Bolivia, and it is also the starting point of the tour of the Bolivian portion of the Wetlands (Pantanal). It is important to mention the presence of two major ethnic groups: the Chiquitanos and Ayoreos.

On the shores of Puerto Suarez is the Caceres Lagoon, which is a popular tourist attraction and has beautiful scenery and landscapes. It has a total surface of 80 km2 and is frequented by various animals such as: batos (jabirus), tapacares, alligators, otters and capybaras or water hogs. It also has several water channels which connect the lagoon to the Paraguay and Pimienta Rivers. The deer from the Wetlands and the deer from the mountains are typical species from this area.

At 8 Km. from Puerto Suarez are the Cuevas de Motacucito (Motacucito Caves), which have an approximate depth of 80 meters.

Towards the South there is the magnificent Mutun Mountain. The mountain is a single block of stone surrounded by brooks which are trapped between this gigantic rock and the forests that surround it. It is considered to be one of the biggest deposits of iron on the planet. In the proximity of this natural attraction there are several recreational areas where visitors can also see samples of rupestrian art.

Tacural is one of the attractions located at 35 Km. from Puerto Suarez. This area is famous for its forests filled with short rainforest trees and is a favored spot by fishermen. The area is also great for observing abundant flora and fauna.

Puerto Busch

Farther down to the South lies Puerto Busch, which is another entry point into the country. The Bolivian Wetlands form part of the scenery of the area which has provided shelter to the Chiquitanos and Ayoreos for centuries, ethnic groups which have retained their original traditions and customs.

Access to the Paraguay River is possible by crossing the Tamengo channel, which connects the heart of South America with the Atlantic Ocean through the Parana and Plata Rivers. There is a great variety of aquatic birds, alligators, capybaras, anacondas which are easy to spot during the summer. Going down this river it is possible to arrive to an area which has several large lagoons and abundant aquatic life: Mandiore, La Gaiba and Uberaba Lakes.

Around this area it is also possible to visit the mines where precious stones are extracted.

Parque Nacional Pantanal

The Parque Nacional Pantanal (Wetlands National Park) expands through an area that is divided into two major sections: the meridional-southern largest section and the smaller sections of the Wetlands.

Activities

The Bolivian Wetlands are a perfect region for fishing, navigating and observing mammals, birds and reptiles.

Visitors may also enjoy Photographic Safaries, Ethnic - Cultural tours, Sailing, Camping, Anthropology, Archeology

Recommendations

The Wetlands can be visited all-year-round, but the best season to observe as much as possible of fauna is during the summer.

When visiting the Wetlands, it is recommended to bring the following:
Light clothes, Comfortable shoes, Sun block lotion, Bottled water, Medical kit, Short trousers, Flashlight, Heavy jacket, Photogaphic or video camera.

Here visitors can admire the beautiful landscape. Typical plates of the region and delicious morsels are served in the cabins. The Pirai River is a favorite place for the local people in the hot days of summer during which temperature rises up to 40C.

The Cabanas del Pirai (Cabins on the Pirai River) is a long dirt road lined with small palm leaf-covered huts on either side where you can taste delicious local baked items at tea time. The road ends at the river which, during the rainy season, will swell to great depths and will not have a beach. During the dry season the river is very wide and so low you can almost walk across it (however, even if the water is low the currents are strong) and there are places where the sand is mucky and feels like quicksand so you should always be very careful where you step. You can enjoy an afternoon here, rent a 4-wheeler to scoot around on, or hire a horse for a short ride.

The "cabanas" rest on what used to be the city's famous Jardin Botanico (Botanical Gardens); however, in the 1980's a great flood washed it out and completely destroyed it (along with several entire neighborhoods including Equipetrol). You can now visit the new and even more beautiful Jardin Botanico located straight East of the city on the road that leads to Cotoca. And why not make a day trip out of it? Visit Cotoca too!

The town is best known for its pottery shops as its ceramic artists are very highly skilled. It is also famous for its Fiesta de Cotoca, held each year in early December. Cotoca is also very well-known for its sugarcane molasses which is sold in small ceramic pots, as well as other baked and candied goods.

Cotoca's central plaza and its church are its main attractions. The Sactuary of the Virgen de Cotoca (locally called Mamita de Cotoca or, Little Mother of Cotoca), a parrish run by Dominican priests, is a beautiful colonial-style church located on the central plaza. Each year very devout Catholics take part in a pilgrimage to Cotoca. As the Virgin of Cotoca is believed to have the ability to perform extraordinary miracles, hundreds walk the entire 17 miles from Santa Cruz to Cotoca hoping that in exchange for their efforts, she will grant them their prayers. Many, in penitence, crawl on their hands and knees all day and night until they reach the church, where they light candles and pray. Others, upon purchasing a new car, take their car to the Sanctuary of Cotoca on Sundays to be blessed by the priests.

Cotoca is the entryway to the Department of Beni and the Chiquitania region, where 400 years ago Jesuit priests attempted to convert the Chiquitano and Guarani natives to Catholicism and established Jesuit Missions.

When you arrive, visit one of the many pottery stores, most of which display their goods along the town sidewalks. Buy a colourful hammock, or spend some time in the central plaza, around which you will find small restaurants and vendors selling regional handcrafts.

Located in Cordillera Province, Santa Cruz Department.

Camiri has an estimated population of 35,000 inhabitants, also known as "Camirenos". The town is located on the shores of the Parapeti River in a small valley surrounded by rolling hills on the East, North, and South, and by the Aguarague mountain range on the West.

Camiri's "Chaco" Ecosystem encompasses subtropical dry forests with low canopy, and intense xerophilic overgrowth with a large diversity of wildlife.

Known as the Gran Chaco, this is a hot and arid region of dry forest savannahs and some rolling hills, mostly brushy vegetation and small trees, very little water, and surprisingly, quite a lot of flora and fauna species. Camiri is known as the oil capital of Bolivia because of the intense petroleum and natural gas exploration activities that are carried out here.

Its population is primarily of Guarani and Spanish origin, although many Aymara and Quecha immigrants have settled in the area. Here the indigenous Guarani have been displaced by other peoples who came to the area after the discovery of oil in the 1920s. Most people here, especially the Guarani, live in extreme poverty.

It is said petroleum used to bubble up to the surface and the Guarani tribes used it for curative purposes, as well as to light their fires. In 1926 petroleum spewed out from the ground and contaminated the Parapeti River. Soon after, Standard Oil Company was installed at this location and a town was "born". After Standard was nationalized, the government took over operations and named the state-run oil company Yacimientos Petroliferos Fiscales Bolivianos (or YPFB for short).

When the country's oil and natural gas industry was once again capitalized and opened up to foreign investment in 1997, the local population was motivated to improve hotel and tourist infrastructure in the area, several small companies that provided services to the oil companies sprang up, a branch of the UAGRM university in Santa Cruz was built, and the construction of a road from Abapo to Camiri was planned. It is as yet unknown how the recent (2006) nationalization again of the oil industry will affect the city's economy.

Camiri is near the borders of Argentina and Paraguay, a strategic location for oil and gas exports and other types of trade. It was one of the sites where battles were fought during the Chaco War between Bolivia and Paraguay (1932-1935). Just 8 kilometers from town visitors can enjoy the "El Chorro" waterfall. Nearby you can also visit hot springs and several other rivers and streams.

In 1770 Bishop Ramon de Herbosos reconstructed the Church and commended this task to Don Antonio Lombardo. In 1838 the old temple was replaced by a new church of eclectic style, designed by French architect Felipe Bestres.

The Metropolitan Cathedral is remarkable for its wooden vaults and for the pictorial decoration that covers them. In the main altar a part of the original silver covering from the Jesuit mission of San Pedro de Moxos is preserved. Four sculptural reliefs are also exhibited that come from the same mission.

La Chiquitania is a vast and extraordinary territory in which we are able to admire churches of the Jesuit period and where we find wonderful wood carvings and equally beautiful paintings of saints and scenes of religious life. These are real architectural jewels preserved by the people of these settlements, and which still keep cultural expressions from the period of the missions. For this reason the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared them as World Heritage Sites in the year 1990.

What is interesting and unique of these churches, is the fact that we are not talking about ruins or deserted places, but churches that still fulfill their religious function in populated villages. The Chiquitania Missions have remained as an extraordinary heritage, since they are the only Jesuit Missions in South America that were not destroyed as the missions located in Argentina and Paraguay.

The Jesuit Missions that preserve their temples and characteristics are: San Javier, San Rafael, San Jose, Concepcion, San Miguel and Santa Ana. Another great attraction of the zone is the Baroque Musical Festival which is held every two years (even years) and the religious Festivities which carry us back to the past because they use their typical dresses and play the instruments build by the inhabitants of these regions themselves.

There are tourist services such as: hotels, cabins and international communications. The highway is stable and safe. There are car rental services in the city and daily buses.

The front resembles a single tile made of several columns. The top portion has window openings with a semicircular groined arch atop of each one. These all have designs from the Renaissance and Florentine periods. Also, there are several statues of women in triumphant positions (Victorias).

The external design of the Casa Dorada maintains the harmony with the internal spaces of the construction, especially with the main dancehalls. The halls every year are used to welcome hundreds of visitors to the traditional International Festival of Guitar and Piano.

Artistic expressions, such as theatre, music and dance, have made the "Casa Dorada" one of the main cultural stages of the region.
