The Oruro Carnival is a cultural and religious celebration with shades of native influence. In 2001 the Oruro Carnival was declared by the UNESCO part of the "Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity".

Below are the details of the activities that will be part of the Oruro Carnival 2014 program:

Inauguration of the Carnival 2014, Grand Inauguration


Date: Saturday, 19th of October, 2014

Place: Avenida Cívica at 15:30

This celebration will have a special program.

First Soiree offered by the Directors of A.C.F.O. (Association of Folkloric Ensambles of Oruro)


Date: Friday, 25th of October, 2014 at 20:00

Place: Polifunctioanl Grounds of the A.C.F.O.
First Soiree Folklórica in devotion to the Virgin de la Candelaria with the participation of the 48 ensambles afiliated to the A.C.F.O.. This celebration will be presided by priests from various religious orders.

Entry of the First Convite


Date: Sunday, 10th of November, 2014

Place: Potosí and Aroma streets - Meeting at: 07:00 a.m.

The First Convite, is the ritual of the devout dancers of Oruro. Traditionally it is an act of devotion for the personal and economic sacrifice of the dancers, it began in the 19th century. The dancers who participate for the first time receive communion during one of the masses in the Socavón Virgin Sancturay and get their uniforms blessed.

In the afternoon each ensamble travels through the streets of Oruro to arrive at the Sancturay. They enter on their knees with a candle in their hands and singing a 'qhochu' of arrival. At the feet of the Virgin of Socavón, the new dancers make their promise to dance at the next carnavil witht the ensamble they came to the temple with.

Election of the 'Predilecta' (Favourite) of the Oruro Carnival 2014


Date: Saturday 30th of November, 2014

Place: At the A.C.F.O building from 15.30 for the First phase

The election of the Predilecta of the Oruro Carnival is an internal beauty competition between the fraternities to elect the queen or 'predilecta' of the Carnival of 2014. It consists of an event in which the participants present themselves in three dresses: the main, the folkloric drss of the fraternity and the dance costume.

Candle procession in Honour of the Candelaria Virgin


Date: Saturday, 1st of February, 2014

Place: Union Park, 16:30

Religious procession with the image of the Virgin of Candelaria (Virgin del Socavón) with the participation of the 48 ensambles.

Band Festival, from 9:00 am. In the Plaza Cívica, near the Sanctuary of Socavón.

Last Convite


Date: Sunday, 23rd of February, 2014

Place: Departure point (Potosí Esq. Aroma): 06:30 a.m.

The last convite before the Majestic entrance of the Oruro Carnival. Constitutes the last practice before the lavish entrance of the Carnival in which the 48 folkloric ensambles dance through the streets of Oruro.

Native entrance Anata Andina 2014


Date: Thursday, 27th of February, 2014

Place: Carnival route from 8:30 a.m.

The Anata Andina is a peasant festivity to celebrate the abundance of agricultural production the "Pachamama" Mother Earth has given them. This celebration belongs to the rainy season (jallupacha) in which the fields have flowered. As a proof, the peasants carry flowers and produce.

The Anata Andina takes place two days before the lavish Oruro Carnival, with the participation of about a hundred groups. The participants arrive to the city of Oruro from the provinces of the Departament.

During the Anata Andino dancers show off their native music, dances and dresses. This event shows the indian Bolivia with its authentic live culture.

Convite of the Tío - Challa


Date: Friday, 28th of February, 2014

Place: Oruro

This Friday is traditionally dedicated to the Convite of the "Tío" (Uncle). The traditional "Challa" of the mining sites mineros in the Mines of San Jose. At night the traditional Soiree takes place on the whole route of the Carnival until dawn, witht the participation of folkloric groups in different places.

In the evening there is a Serenade to the Virgin of Socavón in the main square 10 de Febrero with the performances of folkloric groups, bands and ensambles.

Peregrination to the Sanctuary of Socavón - Lavish folkloric entrance (Main day of the Carnival)


Date: Saturday, 1st of March, 2014

Place: Potosí Esq. Aroma at 06:30 a.m.

Beginning of the entrance: 07:00 a.m.

The Oruro Carnival is famous worldwide and was declared "Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity" by UNESCO. Majestic folkloric entrance with the participation of the 48 folkloric ensambles dressed in colourful costumes in a show of culture, heritage and tradition throught the most incredible choreographies and music.

Sunday of the Carnival - Entrance of the Corso of Oruro Carnival 2014


Date: Sunday, 2nd of March, 2014

Place: Potosí and the corner of Aroma at: 07:00 a.m.

The Sunday of the Carnival the traditional dawn takes place near the Sanctuary of Socavón, with the participation of the bands of the Oruro Carnival.

Date: Monday, 03rd of March, 2014

Farewell of the Dancers before the Virgin of Socavón

Place: Sanctuary of Socavón

On this day masses are held, offered by the various folkloric groups. Also, at several location throughout Oruro there are choreographic demonstrations by dance groups as well as social receptions at their headquarters.

Route of the Oruro Carnival 2014


The route of the Oruro Carnival 2014 will begin with the meeting of the dancers at the corner of Potosí and Aroma streets at 06:30. The route will begin at Bolívar street and follow the same streets as in previous years:

Pagador street, followed by Aroma to the 6 de Agosto, continuing on Bolívar to La Plata, Adolfo Mier and Presidente Montes. Later Bolívar to the Petot, Adolfo Mier, Avenida Cívica "Sanjinés Vincentti", Junín to finally end at the Sanctuary of Socavón with a final procession before the Virgin of Socavón.
