Besides being the starting point for most Uyuni salt flat excursions, Colchani is considered one of the most important villages in the area for having an important salt factory with a capacity to extract 20.000 tons of salt per year, from which 90% is for human consumption.
Colchani city is also known for manufacturing salt handicrafts.
